Father’s Day

I love to think back at how parenting has changed. When my dad was a new father, he was relegated to the waiting room and celebrated my birth by smoking a cigar. Dads were the breadwinners, not the diaper changers. If they took a turn watching their child, we called it “babysitting”, not just being a parent. Fast forward to today, and I see my son-in-laws changing diapers, reading bedtime stories, and manning bath time. If you are still waiting for your little bundle to arrive you can get a head start on being involved:

·       Take a pediatric CPR and First aid class

·       Go with your partner to a prenatal appointment

·       Read to your baby (sounds silly but it’s good practice and there is evidence baby can hear your voice while she is in utero)

Will dad do things differently than mom? Most likely, and that’s OK! Each partner will develop their own style if given the space and encouragement to try. Father’s Day is Sunday – how will you honor the special father figures in your life?
