Take the Screen-Free Challenge
Millennials who grew up in the 90’s might remember Turn Off the TV Week. Back then, screens were pretty much limited to the TV but changing this habit was no less daunting. I remember my Early Childhood Educator challenging our class to give it a try for one week – find new activities to do that did not involve a TV or other screen (adults included). Research shows there are many benefits to unplugging including better sleep, increased physical activity, and stronger social connections.
We made a big deal of the challenge and involved our girls in the planning. We strapped on the bike helmets and biked around the neighborhood, hills and all. We noticed deer along the way and stopped for ice cream. We started reading chapters of the newly released Harry Potter books at bedtime. What memories will you make with your little ones this summer?
Screen-Free Week is May 5-11. Here’s a few ideas to get you started:
· Pack a picnic dinner and eat outdoors.
· Take an after dinner swim at the beach or community pool.
· Invite the neighborhood kids to make chalk art.
· Go on a firefly hunt at dusk (in June).
· Host a neighborhood potluck with a silly theme like monsters.
· Have a dance party with old fashioned albums.
